One format may require several unrelated skills
An essay, presentation, live response, or group discussion can require sequencing, language retrieval, motor output, public speaking, and performance management in addition to subject knowledge.
Keep the standard, vary the route
When flexibility is possible, consider written responses, recorded explanations, diagrams, demonstrations, or structured interviews. Ask what skill is actually being assessed before treating one format as the only evidence of understanding.
