Plain-language privacy notice

Your privacy on Shared Language

Shared Language is a project of Common Axis, Inc. This notice covers sharedlanguage.org. You do not need an account. Using the translator sends text to OpenAI; sending a contact message stores it through Netlify Forms. These are separate choices.

No account

Read articles, use the translator, and open toolkits without signing in.

No application analytics

The site code has no visitor analytics, advertising trackers, or tracking cookies. Hosting still processes request data.

Your browser preferences

Accessibility choices are saved in this browser, not sent to Shared Language.

What Shared Language retains

  • The translator keeps your text and its answer in page memory while you use it. The application does not save them to a database or browser storage, or include them in application logs.
  • Accessibility preferences stay in this browser's local storage. Clearing the site's browser data removes those preferences.
  • The contact form asks for your consent before sending. Netlify Forms stores the fields you submit so Common Axis can review and respond: email, message, topic, any name or organization you provide, and the acknowledgement.
  • Opening another website, sending an email, or printing or saving a toolkit is your choice. Your browser, email service, or destination site then handles that action under its own settings and policies.

Hosting, forms, and AI providers

Netlify hosting and contact forms

Netlify delivers the site, including fonts, images, and toolkit PDFs. It receives technical request data such as your IP address, requested pages or files, browser information, and timestamps. Referring-page information may also be sent by your browser. The translator's rate limit uses IP and domain information at Netlify.

Contact submissions go to Netlify Forms, which stores messages and processes IP and request metadata. Netlify uses Akismet for spam screening. Screening can involve submitted content, contact details, and technical data such as an IP address. Our site code does not show the exact data Netlify passes to Akismet or verify dashboard-configured copies and notifications. Please do not submit confidential case details, medical records, or passwords.

OpenAI and the Behavior Translator

When you submit a valid description to the translator, our Netlify function sends that text and the tool's instructions to OpenAI to generate suggestions. The function is set to use OpenAI's API directly. It does not add a visitor ID, session ID, or your IP address to the OpenAI request. Netlify still receives your connection data, and OpenAI receives the server's connection and API account information. Avoid names and other identifying or confidential details in your description.

Every request to OpenAI includes store: false, asking the Responses API not to store the response as application state. This is not a promise that OpenAI retains no data. Provider retention depends on its policies and account controls. We do not claim approved Zero Data Retention.

OpenAI API data controls

Translator error logs and retention limits

The application does not log translator input or generated answers. Error diagnostics contain only a status code, recognized provider error type or code, and a timestamp; a missing-configuration message contains no visitor text. OpenAI SDK logging is off. These safeguards do not prove that hosting or provider systems keep no data, and they do not erase historical logs. We have not verified account-level retention controls and do not promise a deletion schedule for provider data or contact messages.

Read aloud

Read-aloud uses your browser's speech service and prefers a voice the browser reports as local to your device. If none is available, the site shows a notice before speaking. You must choose “Continue reading aloud” to proceed because the browser may send page text to a remote voice service. If you do not continue, no text is sent to speech. Page text can include a translator answer or a name displayed on a training certificate. Voice locality depends on the browser and operating system; we cannot independently guarantee it or a voice provider's retention practices.

Your choices

  • Read articles, browse the scenario library, or use toolkits without submitting text to the translator.
  • Leave identifying and confidential details out of translator descriptions and contact messages.
  • Use read-aloud only if you are comfortable with the notice shown. You can close the accessibility panel instead of continuing with a remote-capable voice.
  • Clear Shared Language site data in your browser to remove accessibility preferences. This does not delete contact submissions or provider records.
