Unlimited choice can make starting harder
“Choose any topic” or “use your judgment” can sound flexible, but unlimited options may create comparison, fear of choosing incorrectly, or uncertainty about what the evaluator wants.
Keep choice while reducing overload
Offer a few valid directions, show an example, define the required outcome, state what is optional, and allow an alternative proposal. Structure is not the opposite of creativity; it can make creativity easier to use.
