Why this matters
Managers often wait too long to talk about support needs because they are afraid of saying the wrong thing.
The goal is not to diagnose. The goal is to create a better working conversation.
A safe opening
Try: “I want to understand what helps you do your best work. Are there conditions, communication styles, or routines that make work easier or harder?”
Then listen. Do not pressure disclosure. Focus on work conditions, not medical details.
Try this next
Ask one direct report what helps them do focused work well.
